Basket Weaving Demonstration by Kim Carver
About the Event
Maybe you have never wondered what it is like to weave a basket. But after reading the title maybe I have piqued your interest? If so, I will be giving a basket weaving demonstration on Friday, October 16th from 12:00 – 4:00 at the Newberry Artisan Market. You will get to see how the reed that starts in a large spool, is woven flat at the start and through the weaving process becomes a beautiful basket. Maybe by attending this event you will find yourself wanting to learn more about this craft that is said to be: ‘as old as the history of man’.
About our Vendor – Kim Carver
After thirty-eight years teaching music and drama to high school students Kim decided to retire and put her creative energy into her love for weaving. It was the Longaberger Basket Company that got her interested in not just the utilitarian use of baskets but even more in the artistic beauty of baskets. She is sure that she owns nearly a hundred Longaberger baskets but after taking one basket workshop realized that she loved weaving baskets. Thus began her self taught journey into creating baskets in all shapes, sizes and colors.
About the market
This exciting artisan market hosts over 35 local Hudson Valley vendors including pottery, jewelry, unique designer clothing, eco friendly body products, vintage, art and more! We are right in the heart of Saugerties Village too. This beautiful 10K sq ft vintage brick building has 14ft high original tin ceilings, a lovely open feeling inside with a relaxing flow to allow ample room for families, baby strollers and groups to move around. We are dog friendly too! Come see our beautiful products and meet the friendly staff who are ready to help you with your total shopping experience. This building was home to the beloved 5 & 10 general store called JJ Newberry Co. which closed in the 1990’s. Since then it has gone through several iterations and we opened after renovations in 2022.
